Walt here, founder of Simpler Vacations. As I'm working hard to complete the development the Simpler Vacations app, I thought I'd share an example of a personalized itinerary that you may get when you use the Simpler Vacations app. This 4-day trip for 2 to Yellowstone National Park would be hard to top! Feel free to use it for an amazing Yellowstone adventure!

Yellowstone National Park holds a special place in my heart personally because I was lucky enough to have called this place home for several seasons when I worked at the Old Faithful Village. If you've never been, I highly encourage you to visit. It is an incredible reminder of how beautiful this little blue ball floating in space is that we call home.

Trip Overview

  • Travel Dates: June 7, 2027 – June 10, 2027
  • Total Estimated Budget: $2,000 - $2,500 (Excluding flights)
  • Accommodation Summary: 3 nights in a modern, well-located hotel near a park entrance.

Accommodation Suggestions

For your sleek and modern aesthetic and within your budget of $200-$400 per night, I recommend staying just outside the West Entrance of Yellowstone, as this provides easy access to many park highlights and offers more modern lodging options than what's available inside the park itself. Plus, early mornings are a breeze from here!

  • Explorer Cabins at West Yellowstone
    • Style: Individual, modern cabins with a boutique feel, offering privacy and sleek design.
    • Approximate Nightly Rate: $300 - $400
    • Why it's a great fit: These cabins offer a wonderful blend of modern comfort and a connection to the outdoors, perfect for active travelers seeking a stylish stay. They are conveniently located just minutes from the West Entrance.
  • Holiday Inn Express West Yellowstone
    • Style: Contemporary hotel with comfortable, well-appointed rooms.
    • Approximate Nightly Rate: $250 - $350
    • Why it's a great fit: A reliable choice for clean, modern accommodations with good amenities, including a complimentary breakfast (great for those early starts!). Easy access to the park entrance.

Please note that June is peak season for Yellowstone, so booking your accommodations and any private tours well in advance is highly recommended to secure the best rates and availability.

Day 1

Morning

As you'll be arriving in the late afternoon, your morning will be spent traveling. Enjoy the anticipation building! Remember that June 7th marks one of the most beautiful times to visit Yellowstone, with lush landscapes and active wildlife.

Afternoon

  • 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Arrival and Check-in in West Yellowstone
    • Arrive at West Yellowstone and check into your chosen hotel, the Explorer Cabins at West Yellowstone. Settle into your sleek cabin and refresh after your journey.
    • Cost: Hotel nightly rate ($300-$400)
  • 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Town Exploration & Gear Check
    • Take a leisurely stroll through West Yellowstone. This is a great time to visit a local outfitter like Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center (a good option if you want to guaranteed see some of the local wildlife up close, though not quite the same as in the wild) or a general store to pick up any last-minute snacks, water, or essentials for your park adventures. Consider some bear spray (rentals often available) if you plan on significant backcountry hiking.
    • Cost: Varies based on purchases.

Evening

  • 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM: Welcome Dinner at Madison Crossing Lounge
    • Enjoy a delicious and hearty dinner at Madison Crossing Lounge in West Yellowstone. They offer a refined American menu with local ingredients in a historic building.
    • Cuisine: American (New) / Steakhouse
    • Price Range: $$ - $$$ (Entrees $25-$45 per person)
  • 8:00 PM onwards: Relax and Plan for Tomorrow's Early Start
    • Head back to your cabin, review your itinerary for tomorrow's early morning adventure, and get a good night's sleep. Remember, "first light" means a very early start in June!

Day 2

Morning

  • 5:30 AM: Wake Up & Quick Breakfast
    • Grab a quick, pre-packed breakfast from your cabin or a pastry and coffee from a local spot. The goal is to be in the park as early as possible to beat the crowds and maximize wildlife viewing opportunities.
  • 6:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Private Wildlife & Geothermal Tour (West & Lower Geyser Basin)
    • This is where your "Splurge Priority" comes in! To avoid long lines and maximize your wildlife and natural wonder experience, you'll embark on a private guided tour. Your guide will pick you up directly from your hotel.
    • Tour Recommendation: Book a private early morning wildlife and geothermal tour with a highly-rated local outfitter like Yellowstone Safari Company or Yellowstone Luxury Tours. They specialize in tailored experiences.
    • Your guide will take you to prime wildlife viewing areas in the morning (often the Madison River area or along the Firehole River) to spot bison, elk, and possibly bears or wolves before the park gets busy.
    • Afterward, you'll explore the iconic geothermal features of the Lower Geyser Basin, including Fountain Paint Pot and the awe-inspiring Grand Prismatic Spring (from the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk), focusing on less crowded times and viewpoints your guide knows.
    • Cost: Private tours can range from $800 - $1200 for a full day (often including snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, and use of spotting scopes). This is a significant splurge but completely aligns with your desire for no lines and seeing wildlife.
    • Estimated Park Entrance Fee: $35 per private vehicle (valid for 7 days). This will likely be covered by your guide if they provide transport.

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM: Picnic Lunch near Old Faithful
    • Your private tour guide will likely have a scenic spot chosen for a picnic lunch (perhaps a packed lunch provided by the tour company or one you've brought). This will give you time to enjoy the surroundings before the crowds around Old Faithful peak.
  • 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Old Faithful & Upper Geyser Basin (Strategic Timing)
    • With your guide's expertise, you'll strategically approach Old Faithful. While it's popular, your guide can help position you for the best viewing angle and explain the geyser's eruption predictions. Explore the Upper Geyser Basin boardwalks, visiting other impressive geysers like Grand Geyser and Castle Geyser, often with fewer people as the main crowds gather just for Old Faithful.
  • 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Scenic Drive & Return Towards West Yellowstone
    • Enjoy the scenic drive back towards West Yellowstone, perhaps taking a different route per your guide's recommendation to maximize varied landscapes or last-minute wildlife sightings.

Evening

  • 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM: Casual Dinner at Wild West Pizzeria & Restaurant
    • After an active day, enjoy a relaxed and delicious dinner at Wild West Pizzeria & Restaurant in West Yellowstone. Their pizzas are highly rated, and it's a great casual option.
    • Cuisine: Pizza, Italian, American
    • Price Range: $ - $$ (Entrees $15-$30 per person)
  • 7:00 PM onwards: Leisurely Evening
    • Relax back at the cabin. Perhaps enjoy a glass of wine on your private porch. Review photos from the day and prepare for another active day tomorrow.

Day 3

Morning

  • 5:30 AM: Wake Up & Prepare for Adventure
    • Another early start! Grab a quick breakfast and pack plenty of water and snacks for your day of hiking.
  • 6:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - North & South Rims
    • Drive into the park and head directly to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. Arriving early minimizes crowds at popular viewpoints.
    • Highlights:
      • Artist Point: Iconic views of the Lower Falls. Aim to be here for golden hour light if possible, but even later morning is stunning.
      • Uncle Tom's Trail (if open and conditions allow): This is a strenuous but rewarding descent via a series of metal stairs directly into the canyon for an up-close view of the Lower Falls. Check park conditions as it's not always open early in the season.
      • Brink of Upper Falls Trail: A shorter, easier walk to view the Upper Falls.
      • Inspiration Point / Grandview Point: Different perspectives of the canyon and falls.
    • Hiking: Consider the North Rim Trail (partially paved, leads to various viewpoints) or, for a more immerse hike, segments of the South Rim Trail. The trails here offer incredible views, and an early start means you'll share them with fewer people. This is your "perfect two hours" amplified!
    • Cost: Park Entrance Fee (if not already paid and covered by your private tour) - $35 per vehicle for 7 days.

Afternoon

  • 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Picnic Lunch by Hayden Valley
    • Find a scenic pull-off in Hayden Valley for a picnic lunch (packed from West Yellowstone or a grab-and-go from a park general store). Yellowstone Lake Lodge Cafeteria is another option if you prefer something quick indoors.
  • 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Hayden Valley Wildlife Spotting & Mud Volcano Area
    • After lunch, drive through Hayden Valley. This is one of the best places in the park to spot large groups of bison, elk, and potentially grizzly bears (from a safe distance!). Have your binoculars ready!
    • Continue to the Mud Volcano / Dragon's Mouth Spring area. This unique geothermal basin offers a different, more primal and odorous experience with bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and steaming vents. It's often less crowded than the Lower & Upper Geyser Basins later in the day.

Evening

  • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Dinner at The Old Faithful Inn Dining Room (Reservations Essential!)
    • Enjoy a memorable dinner at the historic Old Faithful Inn Dining Room. This is a classic Yellowstone experience, offering American cuisine in a magnificent log structure.
    • Cuisine: American (Classic)
    • Price Range: $$$ (Entrees $30-$50 per person)
    • Note: Reservations for dinner here are HIGHLY recommended, often needing to be made months in advance. Make this a priority booking!
  • 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Evening Wildlife Drive & Return to West Yellowstone
    • As you drive back towards West Yellowstone (approximately 1.5-2 hours without stops), keep an eye out for wildlife, as animals are often most active at dusk. The drive itself is scenic and a perfect quiet close to an adventurous day.

Day 4

Morning

  • 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM: Leisurely Breakfast
    • Enjoy a slightly more relaxed breakfast at your hotel or a local cafe like Running Bear Pancake House in West Yellowstone known for its hearty breakfast options.
    • Cuisine: American (Breakfast/Diner)
    • Price Range: $ - $$ (Entrees $10-$20 per person)
  • 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM: Last-Minute Souvenir Shopping & Park Entrance Photo Op
    • If time allows, grab any last-minute souvenirs in West Yellowstone. Get a classic photo at the West Entrance sign of Yellowstone to commemorate your incredible trip.
  • 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Check-out and Departure Prep
    • Return to the Explorer Cabins at West Yellowstone. This is their standard check-out time. Confirm any luggage storage if needed for a very late flight, but given your mid-morning departure, this shouldn't be an issue.
    • Hotel Checkout Time: Typically 11:00 AM.
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Depart from Yellowstone
    • Begin your journey home, filled with memories of geysers, bison, and stunning wilderness.
